China’s mainland is a distant leader in mobile payment adoption among six APAC markets, according to a Lightspeed survey.

There has been much discussion about China’s mainland leading the world in mobile payment, but how advanced is it compared to other markets? A recent Lightspeed APAC survey has shown that Chinese mainland consumers like to use mobile payment even more than cash - the only one in the six markets included in the survey.

As high as 96% consumers from the mainland mentioned they used “mobile payment app” in the past six months, seven percentage points higher than No.2 “cash”, according to the survey that Lightspeed carried out from July 20 till 31 in six APAC markets. It collected 2,189 answers valid Australia, India, Singapore, China’s mainland and Hong Kong and Taiwan.

From the frequency perspective, nearly 60% of mainland consumers are using mobile payment apps every day, while the most mentioned answers from other markets are all “2 – 3 times a week”.

Chinese mainland consumers are also showing the highest preference for mobile payment: an overwhelming 85% picked mobile payment as their most preferred payment method, no other methods has received more than 7% of the votes. Mobile payment is also the most preferred method in India, but only 38% mentioned it. Australians are spreading their love almost evenly between debit card (33%) and cash (32%). Credit card is most preferred in Singapore and Hong Kong, while consumers from Taiwan like cash (57%) most.

“Convenient and fast checkout” is the universal No.1 reason to use mobile payment in the six markets. In Singapore and China’s Hong Kong and Taiwan, “promotions and deals in app” is the second largest driver.

EN Reasons To Love Mobile Payment

Even though China mainland is the most advanced mobile payment market, its leading brands – Alipay, WeChat Pay, and UnionPay – don’t have meaningful awareness overseas except in Hong Kong, where Alipay is ranked No.1 (92%) and WeChat Pay No.3 (88%). In other markets, PayPal is the overall best-known brand because it is No.1 in one market (Australia), No.2 in three markets (Hong Kong, India and Singapore) and No.3 in one market (Taiwan).

How to unlock the future growth of mobile payment in markets outside of China’s mainland? Lightspeed survey has shown that security for personal information protection is the key barrier. In five out of the six markets surveyed (except Australia), it is the No.1 barrier for those non-users to try this out.
